Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles for Good Design

350

Dieter Rams was an industrial designer, probably most well known from his work designing Braun items in the mid-to-late 20th century.

It’s been speculated that Apple’s Jonny Ives took heavy inspiration from Braun’s design styles and lessons to create the iconic products that make up our lives today.

Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design? To help others answer the same question, Rams created 10 principles for good design, including:

  • Good design makes a product useful
  • Good design is aesthetic
  • Good design makes a product understandable
  • Good design is unobtrusive
  • Good design is thorough down to the last detail
  • and, my personal favorite: Good design is a little design as possible

Vitsoe has the entire list of 10 principles for good design.

E-Readers Are Dead and Tablets Are Cheap

The Verge reports consumers in general are bailing on so-called “e-readers” for more robust devices.

I conducted research at ATK in March 2013 with a cross-section of our online membership customers. Of the 14 customers interviewed on-site, 100% of them owned an e-reader in the past, but had stopped using it completely. These customers all owned (and liked) the Kindle Fire HD, reporting that it’s like their old e-reader device, “but better”. Some also owned an Apple iPad or iPad Mini for iOS games.

With the Kindle Fire HD starting around $200, these customers reported that a color display for video and web browser is worth the extra $130 (over the original Kindle with ads) for customers looking to purchase a casual device.
